How do I apply?
You may download an application off this website, call, write, or stop by (see the "Contact Us" tab for location addresses). Once completed, you may send it by email, mail, fax, or drop it off in person. Please see the contact us page for training center addresses and contact information.
There is no fee to apply.
What are the requirements to apply?
You must be at least 18 years of age, an Alaskan Resident, possess a valid drivers license, social security card, high school transcripts, physically capable of performing the work, and be drug free. Applicants will be required to undergo drug screening upon acceptance into the apprenticeship.
How much does the program cost?
There is no tuition for the program; however, upon acceptance into any of our programs there is tool kit cost of approximately $1,500.00; however, we bring in case managers from the job centers to see if their grants can cover your tool kit cost. Apprentices are also required to join their local union and pay dues. Dues range from approximately $28 - $30 per month, depending on the union.
How long is the apprenticeship?
Each apprenticeship takes approximately 4 years to complete. The apprenticeships are a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Depending on the craft, every apprentice will be required to be in class for 4 to 6 weeks for classroom instruction. After class ends, apprentices will obtain the remainder of their training on the job while working for one of our union contractors. This schedule repeats for approximately 4 years. An apprentice will graduate the program and become a Journeyworker when they have completed the full 5,200 - 7,000 hours of training.
Will I be paid while in school?
Apprentices are not paid during classroom instruction; however, a vast majority of students qualify for unemployment during this time. Once an apprentice has completed the required classroom instruction and is eligible for dispatch, an apprentice may begin working for one of our union contractors. A first year apprentice's wages begin at $26.63 per hour plus retirement and health benefits. An apprentice progresses in wage 5% for every 875 hours or 10% for every 1,300 hours, depending on craft.
